#dropofblood is the new #periodemoji

Pan International, an organization that advocates for the rights of children and especially girls in developing countries, has launched an initiative for its own period emoji.

It is time to remove the taboo surrounding menstruation, and where better to start than in the digital world of Instagram, Facebook, WhatsApp & Co.

“Drop of Blood” the sign for menstruation – is it really that clear?

Plan International asked users to vote and came up with five suggestions: a bloody sanitary pad, a woman's reproductive organs, panties with drops of blood, an appointment sheet with drops of blood and various drops of blood with faces.

The vote on Facebook was clear. Users wanted the panties with the blood drops as an emoji for menstruation.

The emoji has stirred up emotions and given rise to plenty of discussion. The Unicode Consortium ultimately decided on a simple drop of blood, which can stand for many things. Whether this is what the initiators intended is up for debate. Plan International sees the introduction of the menstruation emoji as a first step in the right direction.
