Menstrual items and sustainability – is it possible?

How many menstrual products does a woman need in her life?

A woman is fertile for an average of 38 years and has 3-7days monthly. This means that a woman menstruates on average 2,280days of their lives. Wow! That is 6-7 years in which women menstruate. That is quite a lot. A long time in which a lot of tampons and sanitary pads are needed. Did you know that a woman menstruates approx. 15,000 - 17,000 sanitary pads or tampons consumed? But that doesn't sound sustainable.
But wait, there is a good alternative…

Sustainable menstruation with period underwear

Period underwear is washable and reusable, making it the perfect addition or replacement to pads and tampons during your period.

Our Taynie period briefs are designed to replace up to 7 regular tampons, depending on the model. If well cared for, Taynies will easily last for four years. We recommend using an average of five Taynies during one period. With an average of 456 period cycles that a woman goes through in her life, she only needs about 48 Taynie period briefs on average. That sounds much better than 15,000 tampons or pads.

Less waste is the goal

Tampons and sanitary pads do not last long. They must be disposed of after one use. Often, they are disposed of incorrectly and flushed down the toilet out of shame or because there is no waste bin. Unfortunately, this type of disposal can not only lead to blockages in sewage pipes, but also contribute to the contamination of our water. It is true that used tampons and sanitary pads belong in the general waste, as they are not recyclable or biodegradable.

Unfortunately, this does not solve the problem. Many people are not aware that the residual waste is burned, which promotes the release of toxic substances into the atmosphere. Residual waste that is not burned is often shipped. Tampons and sanitary pads then wait on deserted beaches for up to 500 years to decompose. This is not sustainable for either the environment or our health.
Our Taynie period underwear is made from up to 95% organic cotton and has a lifespan of up to four years, depending on the model and use. Taynie period underwear reduces the amount of residual waste in landfills or lonely beaches and the entry of microplastics into the groundwater or the oceans by several times compared to the use of tampons or sanitary pads.

Final boss packaging waste

The packaging waste from tampons and sanitary pads also leaves its mark. For hygiene reasons, most tampons are packaged in plastic, which ends up in the world's rivers and seas at the end of their journey, causing significant damage to the environment. Even though packaging waste cannot be completely avoided, Taynie is particularly keen to use packaging waste for period underwear made from recycled cardboard and packaging material (FSC standard) and thus declare war on plastic.

Avoidance of biocides that are harmful to health and the environment

Many textile suppliers advertise the use of biocides and their antibacterial effect, which is supposed to prevent odors. This may sound good as an advertising message, but numerous studies and the latest findings now prove their negative effects on people and the environment. These include, for example, the washing out of biocides in the washing machine, the development of resistance, allergies and damage to skin health. According to a Case study by the Federal Environment Agency Biocides are largely washed out after the first few washes, end up in our water and pollute the environment. That's why we don't use biocides. Our Taynie period underwear is machine washable at up to 60 degrees and is therefore sustainably hygienic.

Reduce CO2 and microplastics

According to a Harvard study, a woman using tampons causes 5.3 kg of the greenhouse gas CO2 per year. Using period underwear causes only 1.86 kg of CO2 per year. That is around 65% less. The choice of materials we use for period underwear significantly reduces the burden on our environment through CO2 emissions and microplastics. That's because Taynie period underwear is made of 95% organic cotton.
Taynie also saves up to 70% of CO2 and water in packaging materials.
We also send all packages via DHL-Go green in order to remain CO2 and climate neutral at the shipping level. There are no additional costs for our customers.

What you can do now …

Choose Taynie period underwear now and do your part to protect the environment and ensure sustainability. This way you prevent thousands of additional panty liners or tampons from ending up in landfills and our waterways. You also reduce CO2 emissions and the use of biocides. This not only gives the environment a sigh of relief, but also your wallet.
